RED Hydrogen One: The hype is real!

For those of you who aren’t already aware of this, well there’s a new kid in the block and by the looks of it, he’s here to stay. RED, the premium company known for its cutting edge, high end video recording camera is finally going to make its way to the smartphone market. Yes, you guessed it right. RED is the same company that has provided professional cameras for movies like Guardians of the galaxy, Transformers, Martian and many other big hits. The company reputed for making the best video recording cameras, is all set to put all the years of experience into making a camera-centric smartphone which is expected to outperform even small DSLR’s.

Last year, RED had announced that it was working on a smartphone, but that was all. Nothing specific was revealed about the smartphone, until August of 2017 when the company put forward 2 prototypes. One complete with all the materials, showing exactly how the phone was gonna look and feel.

Whereas the other, was something the smartphone industry had never seen. A working prototype of holographic display. Yes, you read that right. A display that not only works as any other 2D display in the market, but also doubles up as a 4 view display with a real 3D effect, protruding out of the screen. The phone is capable of converting any content shot in 2D mode to 4 View display.

This had further hyped the hype and we all have since been eagerly waiting for this phone to launch. Well, the good news is that we finally have an official word on this. RED CEO Jim Jannard on Tuesday posted a thread on the official forum citing the hardware specifications of the much anticipated phone. The smartphone has an industrial design, is bulky and thick and is probably a 2 handed device for those with short hands. The display measure 5.7 inches and is surrounded by huge bezels on the top and bottom. The phone has a huge footprint, which means RED has a lot of space to cram in the best of smartphone industry and they have done exactly that.

Underneath the hood, it is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, and has a whooping battery of 4,500 mAh battery. The phone much to the surprise, will be having a 3.5mm headphone jack. All that bezel at the front is not wasted either. The phone has dual front firing stereo speakers working on Multi Channel spatial sound system. The phone has a hybrid dual SIM slot and a USB Type-C port. Another interesting thing is that the back has a tri-panel design sporting Kevlar at the bottom and the top, which is top-notch when it comes to signal reception.

On the display front, the phone will feature a QHD display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixel when it is in 2D mode. Much hasn’t been clarified regarding the ‘4V’ or the holographic mode resolution but what is certain is that the brightness of the display will drop by a few nits on this mode. Not to forget, it’s going to be a modular device and will have magnetic pins at the back similar to Moto Z. The RED team has envisioned Cinema-grade camera mods for the Hydrogen One and it has got all of us on our heels.

For those of you who are thinking why there is no information about the highly awaited camera, well that’s because nothing about it has been revealed so far but RED has promised to deliver a camera that will only be outperformed by other RED professional stand-alone cameras.

Technovortex Verdict

Hydrogen One by RED certainly looks promising. Although with a starting price tag of $1,195, the phone is certainly not for everyone. A phone this bulky with an industrial design and out of the box features is something tech geeks would crave for, but how well does the phone carry out day to day tasks is something we will have to wait to know. After all, it’s RED’s first attempt at a smartphone and it is a huge shot at it, to be honest. The 4-digit price tag doesn’t help either, but with all the features and the logo of an ultra-premium brand it seems justified to some extent and was expected by all means. It’s quite evident that RED is targeting a limited audience base with this smartphone, the high end smartphone users. The carrier-unlocked variant of the phone would start shipping this summer, before the carrier-locked variant which will be previewed in April this year. The phone is up for pre-order and if you are one of those who likes to experience a revolution first hand, head over to http://www.red.com/hydrogen to book a Hydrogen One for yourself now.
